WCA delegates and staff call for meeting to potentially remove board members

WCA delegates and staff call for meeting to potentially remove board members

In a surprising twist, certain delegates and staff have launched a petition to hold a meeting to vote on whether to remove each individual board member from the WCA board of directors, this action has never taken place before and shows that there are many in the community who are deeply unhappy about the boards decision to overrule the WCA regulations committee and allow the 0.78 2x2 world record average to stand despite it obviously being achieved with sliding timer starts.

The petition appears to take influence from the Magna Carta which was a historic document in England where the barons petitioned King John to allow them more power, this essentially established that the King was not above the law and could be held to account by parliament, over the centuries since, the power of the monarch has gradually been reduced to where it is now where the monarch is largely a ceremonial position and they have no real power.

The petition demands that the vote be held anonymously and allow several days for members to submit their votes. The petition goes even further as it demands that each board member publicly post an individual statement stating that they support rescinding their own decision to not overturn YiHeng Wang's 2x2 world record average. It also demands that they post a statement on how to restore trust in the board and resign from other positions they may hold in other WCA committees.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, it is important to understand that these board members devote a significant amount of time to the World Cube Association and do not get any financial benefit from doing so, it is possible that if members are voted out, there may not be enough people willing and able to replace them.

The petition also concerns a few other incidents that have happened in the past few years such as the board's decision to rename Taiwan as 'Chinese Taipei' in the WCA database, the board's refusal to suspend the acknowledgement of the Russian regional association during the invasion of Ukraine and some other allegations of concerning behaviour or inaction by specific board members.
