PeakCube S3R - my first speed cube

I had been looking for a speed cube for a while but was a bit overwhelmed with the massive selection on offer. Daniel, at Speedcubing.org came to my rescue and we had a good chat about what was on offer at a range of different price points. The initial thing that attracted me to the PeakCube was the customisability, so I took the plunge.

I could not be happier with my purchase. The cube is nice and fast out of the box and this comes with quite a high degree of flex. I was quite surprised by just how much but even under my brutish touch it has not missed a beat. The colour palate is nice and the little presentation box a neat touch. It does feel and look nice in the hand and I have been unable to put it down for long.

I am a tinkerer and experimenter at heart and have already played with a range of the different options for springs, wheelbase sliders (centre caps) and contact surfaces. This does take a long time but is definitely worth it if you have the patience. Some people have reviewed that they do not feel the difference with some of these changes; but being quite new to this, and with a limited frame of reference, I can certainly feel differences in the options. The differences in the contact surface is a bit of a let down. Firstly because you only get two of the four proposed surface types in the box and secondly because I think the main difference here is going to be with how those surfaces hold and interact with different lubricants. I have not tested this but I will look to do so in the future. Of course for those who already have cubes at this price point, they will look at this and miss some features (such as changeable magnet strength). That would have provided more complete customisability. Maybe this is something that PeakCube's next release will solve.

It is hard to say whether this will be my main cube or only speed cube - but it will certainly help me understand what I do and don't like about cubes really easily. If I do decide I want to try something else then my experiences with this should and could help any future cube purchasing decisions.
