It sounds crazy but it seems that there are people who are seriously invested into finding an optimal solution to every single 2x2 state, while the 2x2 has 3674160 possible states, they were able to use equivalence of states on different sides and symetry to reduce that number down to 154608 unique states.
The group are now determined to find an objectively optimal solution to every single state. The reality is that while it is crazy, it is probably humanly possible to learn every single state and be able to recognize them all in the 15 second inspection time and then execute them consistently in under 1 second with legal timer starts and stops. I just wonder how relevant 2x2 can be if it every truly gets to the point where solves are completely optimal.
Now that the sliding controversy is over with YiHeng Wang's world record average being removed, top 2x2 solvers are now more willing to invest time and energy into this research which could ultimately 'solve' the event.
