Gan SmartCube Super League completes its third year

Gan SmartCube Super League completes its third year

Gan have completed their 3rd year of running the Smartcube Super League. The intention of the smartcube super league is to showcase the abilities of these smartcubes and provide another opportunity for speedcubers to compete in a different environment with a live audience.

There are various videos available on Gan's youtube channel about this event, however, the commentary is entirely in Mandarin and there is currently no english translation, however, hopefully Antoine Cantin or someone else will provide an english translation to the commentary as I believe it would be very exciting for western cubers and may further promote speedcubing.

All of the speedcubers were given Gan 12 UIs but with some slightly different features to allow the competition to function properly, there were initially 16 speedcubers pooled into groups of 4, the cubers then competed against each other in a set system where they both did 5 solves and whoever won 3 or more won the set and the first to win 2 sets won, afterwards the top 2 cubers from each group progressed into the quarter finals. Ultimately the final was between Tymon Kolasinski and Yiheng Wang with Yiheng Wang coming off on top this time.

What is interesting is that they are able to attract a huge live audience to this competition in China and it shows that cubing can be a spectator sport that people are willing to pay to watch, it will be interesting to see if this idea spreads abroad and whether it can also attract enough attention to be worthwhile for anyone trying to organise it. Like with everything, the only way to find out is for someone to take the risk and give it a go.

While a lot of the cubers there were young chinese kids, Gan are determined to invite various international competitors each year, such as Chris Mills from New Zealand, Twan Dullemond from the Netherlands, Tymon Kolasinski from Poland and Feliks Zemdegs from Australia. Obviously these cubers were sponsored by Gan in some regards.
