The Premier Speedcubing League has been announced and is set to hold its first competitions next month. These competitions will be different from official WCA competitions as they will be focused solely on 3x3 speedsolving and will be head to head, the planned format is to have open qualifiers where anyone can participate but then a head to head battle between the top 8 which can then be streamed and hyped up significantly.

Over the past year or so, speedcubers have identified that one of the barriers to speedcubing gaining more publicity is the lack of spectator friendliness, the goal of the Premier Speedcubing League is to draw in more attention to top-level speedcubing, it will firstly happen in parts of the USA but ultimately they hope to have similar things happen in other parts of the world. The competitions will be streamed on Speedcubing TV and will be edited and clipped with the intention of creating exciting moments that people will want to see even if they aren't interested in watching the entire thing.

The organizers have mentioned moments such as Feliks getting a 4.73 second world record single back in 2016 while sitting right next to Mats Valk who previously held the world record with 4.74 seconds, speedcubing hasn't really had a moment like that since then.

One of the goals is to provide an avenue for the very best speedcubers to genuinely make a living off of speedcubing (without having to resort to coaching or running a cube store), there will initially be a $1000 prize pool per event but I suspect they want to eventually increase that as interest grows from the community.

The first event will take place in Berkeley in California on March 16th, followed by one in San Diego, California on March 22nd, it looks like more will be planned soon.
