Are new cubes REALLY better?

Are new cubes REALLY better?

There’s a very common debate whenever a new major 3x3 cube is released,

Is it better than this cube? Is it better than that cube?

And the simple answer is, no!

But that cube isn’t better than the new cube, and this cube isn’t better either.

It’s never about what cube is overall better!

It’s always about what is better based on YOUR opinion! No one else’s!

When the Gan 16 first released,

YouTube was flooded with so many comparison videos trying to say which one is better between Gan 16 and the WeiLong v11!

Some annoyed me, others were bad, a few had good information about the cubes!

But you’re never going to be able to say one cube is definitely better!!

A common thing used when comparing the two is claiming ‘gan copied moyu’ for using a centre skirt.

Since when did cube companies own the ideas? Gan was the first cube company to release a factory magnetic speedcube, the GAN356 AIR UM (cube long discontinued and not stocked at speedcubing.org

When moyu started releasing cubes with ball cores, no one claimed they were copying gan for using their corner to core magnet system seen on the Gan 11.

And I’m sure a lot of people will distance themselves away from older cubes like the MoYu AoLong or the DaYan ZhanChi (both cubes are long discontinued) but in reality, those are still highly competitive nowadays in speedcubing!

Even if they’re not easy to obtain anymore.

(If you’re in the market for them, try privately contact Daniel, he might be able to get hold of some for you)

During Daniel’s sub-10 100 cube challenge he found himself getting more consistent attempts on older cubes.

Even if it may involve gluing in some magnets and maybe even designing a custom corner to core magnet kit. Older cubes can still compete!

Something as old as the Gan 12 is so highly valued as it stood the test of time and it shows older hardware is just as popular!

They are still just as good as cubes released in 2025!

Everyone has their pretences when it comes to speedcubing!

For example, the MoYu WeiPo V5. Used by Yiheng Wang, the 2025 speedcubing world champion. Despite every other top 2x2 speedcuber using the Gan 251.

Neither are better than the other, more people are just comfortable with the Gan 251 after years of use.

7x7 has one of the most interesting debates when it comes to cube preference!

With the newly released MoYu AoFu v5 it’s causing a lot of discomfort with its size! While it is a great cube, this has caused many to stick with the previous MoYu AoFu WRM.

And some people even use a heavily modded MoYu MeiLong v2

Modding cubes can bring improvements but improvements don't necessarily mean the cube is better! While the Picube AoFu WRM is an amazing upgrade, it's not necessarily better than an unmodded AoFu and for most people isn't required!

Though some are switching to a competition legal QiYi Warrior 7x7 due to its similarities and improvements over the MeiLong v2. With extra feet magnets at such a cheap price.

While both the Warrior and MeiLong require modding to keep up and in the MeiLong’s case, maintain. They're still amazing options used by many top class 7x7 speedcubers!

One thing that can heavily impact preference on cubes is the size!

With a lot of cube manufacturers heavily pushing that smaller size, especially for big cubes. A lot of people are sticking with previous hardware as the smaller size just doesn’t fit right with them!

4blind and 5blind are some prime examples!

The smaller size is detrimental to big blind events so moyu’s AoSu v7 and AoChang v6 become at times unusable

Doesn't mean they're not bad cubes, they just don’t meet the preferences and opinions of those who do big blind events!!

But At the end of the day!

No cube is truly better than another, it truly comes down to preference and opinions!

There are many cubes that I dislike that are used by many top class solvers

However, most people can view cubes as better or worse due to one major factor. PRICE!

When it comes to reviews, people will ask themselves “would i be happy if I received this cube at this price point?”. The price is why cubes like the RS3M v5 are viewed so highly, because you're getting such ‘premium’ hardware for a cheaper price. Due to something like the Gan 460 v2, its underwhelming due to an expensive price point!

If we took all cubes without price in mind, they're all equally as good!

You are welcome to like what cubes you do! Saying one cube is definitively better than another just isn't necessarily true!
