Caleb Wolf Dunn Breaks UK 4x4 Single and Average Records at Southport Autumn 2026
Caleb Wolf Dunn has broken both UK National Records for 4x4 at Southport Autumn 2026, including a historic 19.64 single – the first official sub-20-second 4x4 solve by a British speedcuber.
Caleb also set a new 24.59 National Record average, making Southport an extraordinary competition for one of the UK's fastest speedcubers.
Southport Autumn 2026 took place in Southport, Merseyside on 12th and 13th September 2026. At the time of writing, the results have not yet been fully published on Caleb's WCA profile, although they should appear shortly.
Caleb Wolf Dunn Becomes the First Brit to Solve a 4x4 in Under 20 Seconds
The standout result from the weekend was undoubtedly Caleb's 19.64-second 4x4 single.
Breaking 20 seconds is one of the biggest milestones in 4x4 speedsolving, and Caleb has now become the first British competitor to officially break the barrier.
It is an especially significant achievement considering where Caleb stood before the competition. His previous official personal best was 21.47, set at Crewe May 2026.
That means Caleb didn't simply sneak below his previous best – he improved it by an enormous 1.83 seconds and went straight from 21.47 to 19.64.
The 19.64 also represents a significant moment in the history of British 4x4 speedsolving. After years of the UK record moving steadily towards 20 seconds, the barrier has finally been broken.
A New 24.59 UK National Record Average
Caleb wasn't finished with the single.
He also produced an extremely strong five-solve set to record a 24.59 National Record average:
- 26.62
- 22.45
- 20.92
- 25.22
- 26.11
With the fastest and slowest results removed, the counting solves were 22.45, 25.22 and 26.11, producing the new 24.59 National Record.
What makes the average particularly impressive is that the entire set was below 27 seconds. Caleb also produced two solves below 23 seconds within the same average, including a 20.92 which would itself have been very close to the previous British record.
Two National Records at the Same Competition
Taking both records at the same competition represents a huge step forward for Caleb in 4x4.
Before Southport, his official WCA personal records stood at 21.47 single and 26.25 average.
| Result | Before Southport | Southport Autumn 2026 | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 21.47 | 19.64 NR | 1.83 seconds |
| Average | 26.25 | 24.59 NR | 1.66 seconds |
For someone who was previously outside the very top positions in the UK rankings for both 4x4 single and average, taking both National Records in one weekend represents an enormous improvement.
Caleb's Rapid Improvement in 4x4
Caleb is best known for his performances in 3x3, where he has established himself as one of the fastest British competitors and currently holds the UK National Record 3x3 average of 5.44 seconds.
However, his recent results show rapid improvement across 4x4 as well.
At Crewe May 2026, Caleb recorded his previous 21.47 personal best single alongside a 27.24 average. At the Manchester Cubing League Final later in the year, he won 4x4 with a 26.25 average.
At Southport, he has now jumped all the way to 19.64 and 24.59.
The progression is particularly striking for the single. Going from a 21-second official best to becoming Britain's first sub-20 solver in a single competition is a huge jump.
More Than Just One Lucky Solve
Although the 19.64 will understandably receive most of the attention, the new average demonstrates that Caleb's performance wasn't simply the result of one exceptional scramble.
His National Record average contained a 20.92 and 22.45, alongside three further solves between 25 and 27 seconds.
That means Caleb produced three exceptionally fast 4x4 solves during the weekend: 19.64, 20.92 and 22.45.
The 24.59 average therefore arguably tells us just as much about his improvement as the headline-grabbing sub-20 single.
A Huge Weekend for Caleb Wolf Dunn
The two 4x4 National Records add to what has already been an outstanding 2026 for Caleb.
Earlier this year he broke the UK 3x3 average record with 5.44 seconds, establishing himself at the top of the British rankings in speedcubing's main event.
He has now added two 4x4 National Records to his achievements, including one of the most significant milestones possible in the event.
19.64 seconds.
For the first time, an official British 4x4 solve begins with a 19.
And with a new 24.59 National Record average alongside it, Southport Autumn 2026 could mark the beginning of another major British record battle as the country's fastest 4x4 solvers begin chasing the new benchmarks.
You can follow Caleb's official results on his World Cube Association profile, with the Southport results expected to be added shortly.
