Caleb Wolf Dunn Breaks 3x3 UK National Record with 5.43 Average

Caleb Wolf Dunn has broken the 3x3 UK National Record average once again, recording a 5.43 average at Weston-super-Mare Autumn 2026.

In the final, Caleb recorded:

  • 5.72

  • 4.79

  • 5.97

  • 5.19

  • 5.37

With the fastest and slowest solves removed, his counting times of 5.72, 5.19 and 5.37 produced an average of 5.43 seconds.

It was enough to improve his own previous National Record by the smallest possible margin: 0.01 seconds.

From 5.44 to 5.43

Caleb's previous National Record was a 5.44 average, which he set at Weston-super-Mare Spring 2026 in May.

That average consisted of 5.92, 4.98, 5.20, 5.19 and 6.00 and established Caleb as the fastest British 3x3 solver by official average.

Just a few months later, and at another competition in Weston-super-Mare, he has managed to improve the record again.

While the improvement from 5.44 to 5.43 might look tiny, at this level finding even another hundredth of a second is incredibly difficult. Caleb needed three counting solves averaging just 5.426 seconds to move the record forward.

Four Sub-5 Second Solves in Two National Record Averages

There is also an interesting contrast between Caleb's two National Record averages.

His previous 5.44 contained a 4.98, while his latest average contained an even faster 4.79. However, both of these solves were removed from their respective averages as the fastest solve of the five.

His new 5.43 was therefore achieved without the 4.79 contributing to the final result at all.

Instead, the record was built from three remarkably consistent counting solves: 5.72, 5.19 and 5.37.

The 4.79 nevertheless demonstrates the speed Caleb is capable of producing within a competition average and was comfortably the fastest solve of the final.

Another National Record in an Outstanding 2026

The result continues an exceptional year for Caleb Wolf Dunn.

He first set the 3x3 National Record average at 5.44 at Weston-super-Mare Spring in May and has now lowered it again to 5.43.

Caleb has also produced a string of very fast individual solves throughout 2026, including a 5.31 at Crewe May, 5.24 at Sheffield Spring, 5.32 at Manchester Cubing League - Third and 5.36 at Wakefield Summer.

Perhaps even more remarkably, 3x3 isn't the only event in which Caleb has been rewriting the British record books.

Only recently, he became the first British competitor to officially solve a 4x4 in under 20 seconds, recording a 19.64 National Record single at Southport Autumn 2026. At the same competition he also set a 24.59 National Record average.

He has therefore now produced major National Record performances in both 3x3 and 4x4 during a remarkably successful period of competition.

Caleb Wins the Final

The 5.43 average comfortably gave Caleb victory in the 3x3 final at Weston-super-Mare Autumn.

Danny Morgan finished second with a 6.80 average, while Tommy Lynn and Rufus Cripps both recorded 6.95 averages.

Caleb's 4.79 single was also the fastest solve of the final.

How Much Further Can the UK Record Go?

Caleb's progression over the past year has pushed the British 3x3 average record firmly into the mid-5-second range.

His 5.43 also places him among a relatively small group of competitors worldwide who have officially averaged below 5.5 seconds.

The improvement this time may only have been one hundredth of a second, but that is increasingly the nature of records at this level. As averages become faster, there is less room for enormous jumps and every fraction of a second becomes increasingly difficult to find.

Caleb has now broken his own record with 5.43, but with a 4.79 appearing in the very same average, there is clearly potential for an even faster set of five solves in the future.

For now, the benchmark for British 3x3 speedsolving is 5.43 seconds.
