The standard of UK speedcubing has continued to rise rapidly over the past few years, and Caleb Wolf Dunn has now pushed it even further by setting a new United Kingdom National Record average of 5.44 seconds for the 3x3 cube. (Speedcubers Digest)
The record was achieved at Weston-super-Mare Spring 2026 during the first round of 3x3, where Caleb produced the following solves:
-
5.92
-
(4.98)
-
5.20
-
5.19
-
(6.00)
This resulted in an official average of 5.44 seconds, breaking the previous UK national record and moving Caleb to 7th in Europe and 38th in the world for 3x3 average at the time of the result. (Speedcubers Digest)
What makes this result particularly impressive is the consistency of the solves. Modern world-class 3x3 averages are no longer just about getting one lucky scramble — competitors need multiple sub-6 solves in a row under official competition pressure. Caleb’s average included three counting solves in the low 5-second range and was backed up by a very strong 4.98 single.
The result also continues a huge progression over the past year. Earlier in 2026, Caleb achieved his first official sub-6 average with a 5.96 average at Leeds Spring 2026, becoming one of the first 100 people in the world ever to officially average under 6 seconds. (speedcubing.org)
Since then, he has continued improving rapidly and has now firmly established himself among the strongest 3x3 solvers in the United Kingdom.
However, Caleb is far from being only a 3x3 specialist. He is already one of the UK's most successful all-round competitors and currently also holds UK national records in Clock, including a remarkable 2.00 single and a 2.68 average. (World Cube Association)
At the 2025 WCA World Championship, Caleb’s 2.68 Clock average actually won the first round and set the UK national record on the world stage.
He has also had major success in Pyraminx, finishing runner-up at the 2024 UK Championship, further demonstrating how versatile his solving ability has become across multiple events. (World Cube Association)
The UK has seen enormous growth in elite-level speedcubing recently, with several competitors now capable of world-class results in 3x3. National records have fallen repeatedly over the last few years, and sub-6 averages are becoming increasingly common among the very top UK solvers. Caleb’s 5.44 average is another sign of just how competitive the British cubing scene has become.
With his rapid improvement rate and increasing consistency, it would not be surprising to see Caleb push even closer towards the global elite in the near future. A sub-5 official average, once considered almost impossible, is now beginning to look realistic for a growing number of top competitors worldwide.
