Is the RS3M 2020 still the best budget 3x3 speedcube?

Is the RS3M 2020 still the best budget 3x3 speedcube?

The MoYu RS3M 2020 is probably the best selling speedcube of all time, it has sold incredibly well both on my stall and on many other cube stores around the world and has become the standard at which all new cubes are compared.

Cubes are tested at how they compare to the RS3M 2020 - if a cube is more expensive then it has to either be objectively better or offer something unique that a specific cuber may be looking for.

But should you still get the RS3M 2020 in 2025? Well there are so many options now at the same price range that it is very difficult to say, the RS3M 2020 is still a great cube and is a very safe option, it is a bit heavier than most other cubes but has magnets that are slightly too weak, in the early days I would offer extra magnets that could go in the edges to make it a bit stronger. However, I would argue in 2025 that there are now better options that most cubers will prefer. MoYu themselves have released a range of updated versions that are slowly gaining in popularity. Here are a few other options to consider for the under-£10 price range:

MoYu RS3M V5 Standard: This cube is actually even cheaper than the RS3M 2020, it is still quite a heavy cube and features a more matte exterior but the performance is possibly slightly better than the RS3M 2020.

MeiLong 3x3 V2M UV Coated: This is the cheapest UV coated 3x3, the cube is very fast but maybe slightly less controllable, it features a dragon scale piece design and is essetially an upgraded and magnetized version of the MeiLong 3x3 which has become the standard for ultra-budget speedcubes.

QiYi M Pro V2 Flagship: The QiYi M Pro series has been ignored a bit by speedcubers for some reason but a lot of the cubes in this series are very good, the QiYi M Pro V2 Flagship is the latest in the series that is under £10, although out of the box it simply doesn't perform as well as the more expensive pioneer version, if you get this cube then I would definitely recommend some lubricant to go with it.

Ultimately, search engines function in a way that content takes time to rank highly, this means that older blog posts and videos can be the first things new cubers see, these older pieces of content may be outdated as cubes are constantly improving, however, I am pleased that in 2025 we can look back at the best cubes from 5 years ago and conclude that they are still viable speedcubes and it is not going to make a major difference to your times if you get one of them.
