Zeal Smart Timer – Scrambles, Statistics & Solve Storage Without a Phone

The Zeal Smart Timer takes a very different approach to smart speedcubing timers. Instead of connecting to an app on your phone, the Zeal puts its smart features directly into the timer itself.

Its built-in display can generate and show scrambles, store up to 1,000 solve times, calculate averages and allow you to mark solves with +2 or DNF penalties. This gives you many of the advantages of a smart timer without Bluetooth, an app or even having your phone beside you while you practise.

Available in Blue and White – simply select your preferred colour above.

📱 Smart Timing Without a Smartphone

Most smart speedcubing timers work by connecting to an app. The Zeal Smart Timer is different: its additional features are built directly into the timer.

This makes it particularly useful for younger speedcubers who don't have their own smartphone, as well as anyone who wants to practise without the distractions of having a phone beside them.

Turn on the timer, select your event and you can generate a scramble, time your solve and save the result using one device.

There is no Bluetooth pairing, no account to sign into and no app required.

🧩 Scrambles Displayed Directly on the Timer

One of the Zeal Timer's most distinctive features is its ability to generate scrambles and display them directly on its screen.

The timer includes scramble generation for eight popular speedcubing events:

  • 2x2
  • 3x3
  • 4x4
  • 5x5
  • Pyraminx
  • Skewb
  • Clock
  • Square-1

This means you can complete a full practice session without needing to use a separate scramble generator on your phone or computer.

For 3x3 practice in particular, you can simply read the scramble from the timer, scramble your cube, put your hands on the sensors and solve.

💾 Store Up to 1,000 Solve Times

A conventional speedcubing timer normally displays your latest result but doesn't keep a complete history of your practice.

The Zeal Smart Timer can store up to 1,000 solve records internally.

This makes it possible to keep track of a substantial practice session without manually entering every solve into another device.

Your times remain available directly through the timer, giving you a simple way to review previous results while keeping your practice setup completely independent from a smartphone.

📊 Built-In Averages

The Zeal doesn't just store individual solve times. It can also calculate common speedcubing statistics directly on the timer.

These include:

  • Ao5 – Average of 5
  • Mo3 – Mean of 3

This allows you to see how consistently you are solving rather than concentrating only on individual best times.

➕ Add +2 and DNF Penalties

Another useful feature for competition-style practice is the ability to edit results with +2 and DNF penalties.

If you finish a solve with a misalignment that would receive a +2 in competition, you can record that penalty rather than having an artificially fast result stored in your session.

Likewise, unsuccessful solves can be recorded as a DNF.

This makes your stored results and averages much more representative of how the same solves would be recorded in competition.

⏱️ Use It Like a Normal Speedcubing Timer

Despite all of the additional features, the Zeal can still be used like a conventional speedcubing timer.

Place both hands on the sensors, wait until the timer is ready, remove your hands to begin your solve and place both hands back on the sensors when you finish.

If you don't want to use the scramble generator or statistics during a particular session, you can simply use it to time your solves.

🔋 Rechargeable Battery

The Zeal Smart Timer uses a rechargeable battery, so there is no need to continually replace disposable batteries.

This is particularly convenient if you use your timer frequently for long practice sessions.

🎨 Available in Blue & White

The Zeal Smart Timer is available in two colour options:

  • Blue
  • White

Both versions provide the same core smart timing features. Select your preferred colour using the options above.

🎯 Who Is the Zeal Smart Timer For?

  • Cubers who want smart features without connecting to a phone
  • Younger speedcubers who don't have their own smartphone
  • Cubers who want scrambles displayed directly on their timer
  • Anyone who wants to store solve times without entering them manually
  • Cubers who want Ao5 and Mo3 statistics available directly from their timer
  • Anyone who prefers a distraction-free practice setup

If you simply want an inexpensive conventional timer, the QiYi Timer is a simpler and cheaper option.

If you want your solve data transferred to a smartphone automatically, consider the MoYu AI Timer, QiYi Smart Timer or GAN Halo Timer.

The Zeal sits between these two categories: more functionality than a conventional timer, without requiring the phone connection of a Bluetooth smart timer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Zeal Smart Timer need a phone?

No. This is one of the Zeal Timer's biggest advantages. Its scramble generator, solve storage and statistics are built directly into the timer, so you don't need a smartphone or app to use them.

Does the Zeal Timer have Bluetooth?

No. Unlike the GAN Halo, QiYi Smart Timer and MoYu AI Timer, the Zeal doesn't transfer your results to a smartphone using Bluetooth.

Instead, results and statistics are stored and displayed directly on the timer itself.

Which puzzles can the Zeal Timer generate scrambles for?

The Zeal Smart Timer can generate scrambles for 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, Pyraminx, Skewb, Clock and Square-1.

How many solves can the Zeal Timer store?

The timer can store up to 1,000 solve records, allowing you to complete substantial practice sessions without manually recording every result elsewhere.

Can the Zeal Timer calculate averages?

Yes. The Zeal can calculate Ao5 (average of 5) and Mo3 (mean of 3) directly on the timer.

Can I record +2s and DNFs?

Yes. Stored results can be marked with +2 or DNF penalties, making the timer particularly useful for competition-style practice.

Is the Zeal Smart Timer suitable for children?

Yes. The Zeal is particularly useful for younger cubers because all of its main smart features work without a smartphone. A child can generate scrambles, time solves, store results and view averages entirely on the timer.

Is the Zeal Timer used at WCA competitions?

The Zeal is designed for personal practice rather than use as the official timing equipment for WCA attempts.

If you specifically want to practise using the timer setup that will be required at official WCA competitions, consider the Speed Stacks G5. From 2 January 2027, official WCA attempts using a speedsolving timer will require the G5 in 4-pad mode.
